Published in Tokyo in 1964 by Wunternaum Press, the imprint Yoko Ono created for the occasion, Grapefruit gathers her “instructions”: scores of a few lines that shift the work from the object to the reader's mind. Imagine a cloud, listen to the sound of snow, paint a picture you will never see. Printed in a small run of 500 copies, the book is now regarded as one of the founding texts of conceptual art and the most direct document of Ono's Fluxus orbit.
This copy is signed and dedicated by the artist. It comes with rare ephemera, including To the Wesleyan People, the text Ono wrote for a lecture at Wesleyan University in early 1966, setting out her conception of an art of the inner event.
